Most of the details, info and experiences are generally applicable to travelling with children to countries in which we offer campervans, motorhomes and 4wd vehicles, such as the USA, Canada and Africa as well as Australia and New Zealand. All our Totally Campers consultants have young families and amongst them have gathered a wealth of experience and information regarding travelling with young kids. Plans on going on a camper or 4wd holiday with your family? Please contact us or let us know that you will travel with young children when you send in your enquiry form through this website. Our consultants will then pay special attention to this fact and make sure they inform you accordingly.

Child seats: Some 4wd’s and 4wd campers can be fitted with child restraints. A child seat is compulsory for children up to 3 years of age. A Booster seat is compulsory for children between 4 and 6 years of age. Exceptions to these rules are always possible in case a child is light or heavy for his or her age, or tall/short. Using your own child restraint is not legal in most countries, unless you live in the country you travel in. !

Sleeping arrangements: For small kids sleeping in the roof-tent which features many 4wd campers, may not be such a good idea for obvious safety reasons.
Some vehicles allow people to sleep inside or in a separate ground-tent.

2+ person-4wd campers: Only a small number of 4wd’s and 4wd campers are suitable for more than 2 people and the maximum number of seatbelts in a 4wd vehicle is always 5.   This obviously means that these vehicles will be the first ones to become booked full.  Please be aware about this and make your enquiries early on when you travel with children.  Pay special attention to the 4wd’s with off road trailer which we offer along the West Coast of Australia.  These are the ultimate family-4wd holiday vehicle combinations!

Hours on the road: After booking we can also help you with making a rough planning to ensure you do not wear out the kids, working out a maximum number of kms to travel every day. That is very important: long distances due to a wrong planning result in unhappy children, which again results in parents who cannot enjoy the trip to the fullest. Take your time! When putting together an itinerary, try to work with a maximum of between 150 and 200 kms per day on average.

Adventure: Children love adventurous activities. For most kids that can be achieved by simply bush camping and sitting around an open fire at night, roasting marsh mallows! Nature walks, short or longer, depending on the age of your children, can be fantastic too, especially when there is lots of wildlife to spot! Children must play, so allow ample time for this and make good use of the many playgrounds that you come past along the way. Visiting a Zoo is also a great thing to do.  However,  when you make an effort to travel through remote areas with your 4wd,  the kids and yourself will may have had an animal-overdose already as wildlife in the bush is abundant!   Or try and visit a farm with the kids. Many farmers are keen on explaining and showing the working of their pride and joy if you show genuine interest and kids usually love this!
